Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi was offered the post of BJP president in 2010 by none other than the RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Rao Bhagwat, according to reliable sources in the BJP.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said Bhagwat met Modi twice in Gandhinagar, and was asked to take up the top party slot.
Given the growing list of people vying for the post, including top central leaders like Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu, Ananth Kumar, Rajnath Singh, the RSS decided to step in announcing Modi as its first choice.
